History has touched this community many times. The Confederate Army camped there in the winter of 1864, interrupting services frequently with nearby skirmishes. The first church was established in 1848 holding services in a brush arbor, approximately 50 yards from the churches present location. In 1851, in the brush arbor location, the first building was erected. That building was destroyed by fire in 1890, less than 50 years after it was constructed.
The sanctuary that is still in use today was built in 1896. During the 1900’s when the Louisa gold mines were in operation, Mt. Horeb served a thriving rural community. The growth of this community spurred the construction of Sunday School rooms which were dedicated in 1957. The church once again suffered loss by fire in 1987. It was partially destroyed, leaving the outside structure intact, sparing the wooden sanctuary with only smoke and water damage.
